Red Anchor Gets Two New Sizes

Jul 08, 2023

United Cigars is expanding its 250-year-old Red Anchor brand, adding two line extensions to the portfolio. Called Captain and Gunner, the cigars measure 5 inches long by 50 ring gauge and 6 1/2 inches long by 43 ring gauge, respectively. The smokes are expected to reach retailers by the end of this month.

According to United Cigars, which is based in New Hampshire, the origins of the Red Anchor brand goes all the way back to the late 1700s in Holland. Originally a family-owned cigar brand, it was passed down from generation to generation before being sold at the turn of the 20th century, and it eventually went off the market in the 1930s.

Last year, United Cigars purchased the trademark rights to the old brand and partnered with the Kelner family of the Dominican Republic to relaunch Red Anchor with the release of the toro-sized Admiral. The new line extensions will bring the brand up to three vitolas in total, with another expected to ship later this year. All sizes are made at the Kelner Boutique Factory in Santiago.

Red Anchor features a Habano 2000 Ecuador wrapper with a mix of Dominican and American tobaccos to round out the binder and filler, including some tobacco grown on farms owned by the Kelner family. United says the cigars have a medium-to-full body. Like the rest of the line, the two new sizes will come in boxes of 25.

Both Captain and Gunner are expected to retail at $20 per cigar, or $500 per box.
